27 Feb Know Your Rights
On February 21, Azarmehr Law Group (ALG) gave a presentation for residents at a community event hosted by GVA Property Management. The presentation, entitled “Conozca Sus Derechos” (Know Your Rights), was approved by ALG’s family-based immigration attorney, Estella Rendall, and delivered in Spanish by ALG’s family-based paralegal Enrique Chavira Cantú. The presentation covered immigrant rights and attorney-recommended procedures during contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at home, at work, in the car, and in public places. “Red cards” were distributed outlining immigrants’ rights under the U.S. Constitution.
The presentation was delivered only a few weeks after ICE conducted a raid on the very apartment complex where the February 21 event was hosted. The raid directly impacted a number of families and shook the surrounding community. Many Austinites are not aware that such raids are taking place in their city, as more and more of their friends’ and neighbors’ lives are deeply affected, due to their immigrant status. The main takeaway from ALG’s presentation was that, whether someone is a citizen or noncitizen, when they come into contact with law enforcement, they must know their constitutional rights, so they can exercise those rights while remaining calm in those tense and often frightening situations.
