One of ALG’s longest standing team members tells his immigration story

For this blog post we wanted to recognize an institution at ALG: Bijoy Mani, who has been with our firm since 2007. Through transitions over the years, Bijoy has held a variety of roles, always learning new things, and always remaining dedicated. Bijoy, like much of our staff at ALG, is an immigrant and has personal experience with the U.S. immigration process. Bijoy sat down to talk with Jasmine Castellanos, our Operations Coordinator, about his journey to the U.S., and his time with ALG.

Jasmine: When did you start at ALG?

Bijoy: I’ve been working here since September 2007. When I started, there were hundreds of thousands of physical files. I helped to make them all digital.

Jasmine: What different roles have you had here?

Bijoy: I’ve been a Case Manager, a Legal Assistant, an Office Administrator, and now I’m working as an Accountant. Whatever I was asked to do, I learned.

Jasmine: What’s your immigration story?

Bijoy: I’m from Kerala, in the south of India. I first came to the U.S. in 2006. My wife got a job here and a green card. My wife and I were working in Kuwait before coming here. There, permanent residency was not an option, only work visas. If we had returned to India, it would have been difficult for us to find work because there is a maximum age limit for government jobs.

We wanted to go to a place where we could have permanent residency and more stability. In the U.S., we could have that and also a good education for our kids and many kinds of freedom.

Jasmine: What do you like about working at ALG?

Bijoy: I like working with Mehron, and others who are very nice to work with. Working in a foreign country is challenging, but I was supported and given lots of chances to learn.

Bijoy’s daughter is a freshman in college at UT Austin, and his son is a sophomore in high school.
